Stuck in a cave with a lost treasure to find
Obsessed with the hunt and out of my mind
Would I find an artifact? A mountain of gold?
Riches and reputation would surely unfold!

The deeper I ventured, the more I began to sweat
If I found the Torch of Broken Destiny I'd be set!
The caverns became a nightmare and haunted my dreams
Not everything in this dungeon is what it seems

I thought of every terror and every single flaw
Panicked and shook, I took a look and then finally saw
Within the depths of this hell, there was no reward
There'd be no cheering crowd, no reason to feel adored

I took out my pickax, dressed up in my finest clothes
Would I find the biggest haul of all or suffer woes?
My vanity, my insecurity -- it all swirled in my head
My fate was appropriate, I would end up alone and dead

Insanity crept inside and let me know it was here to stay
All of my desires for wealth would be the price I'd pay
When I saw the light at the end of the tunnel, I sighed
There was no treasure, just signs that I went mad and died

The light took me into a cold embrace and whispered to me
"All of the mad thoughts in your head were right, see?"
Every bad deed flashed before me and I fell to my knees
My soul was still tainted with greed as I begged, please --

... I woke in a feverish state, a dream I can't quite shake
I tried to tell myself it was a better life I wanted to make
The life of a treasure hunter is lonely and misunderstood
At the end of my journey, death must be the likelihood

As streams of tears came down my face, I started to rage
I was locked up in a very tiny, padded and white cage
"You never hunted treasure, you just stayed in your room,"
They scolded me and told me of my insanity and my doom

"We found you shouting about luxury and wanting wealth,"
They told me I was mad, that I had bad mental health
As they shut the door behind me, I begged for the treasure
A fictional reward that always promises false pleasure
